Posted on Dec 29 2004 under the Asia category with no comment yet

Death toll in the Asian tsunami has reached 68,000 according to some media outlets while the United Nations fears that the number “may double” because of disease outbreaks in the affected countries. The UN is faced with a huge challenge to aid the afflicted regions in Asia. “The UN has said it faces an unprecedented challenge in co-ordinating distribution of aid to some 10 nations at once,” BBC News reported. The tsunami was triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, the world’s largest in 40 years and fourth-strongest in a century.
